PONAGAR TOWER NHA TRANG
This group of Cham towers is located on top of a low marble mountain formerly surrounded by the sea. Ponagar Tower is a complex of Cham towers with the architecture common in the eighth century to the thirteenth century, the tower was built in the flourishing period of the Hindu in Champa, which why goddess had Uma shape (wife of Shiva).
The Ponagar complex consists of three floors with a gate tower on the first floor which was totally destroyed. In front of the relic complex are two rows of 10 large pillars and two small pillars on the two sides. In the middle an altar where the Cham people often organize cultural activities and solemn rites on festivals and special occasions. The second floor, called Mandapa (guest house), is the place where pilgrims can rest and prepare before performing rituals. On the third floor, there are four towers, the most beautiful of them were built in 813 and 817 with baked bricks, has a pyramid shape apex. Unfortunately, time and environmental factors have destroyed most of the towers. The Ponagar Tower is the most outstanding and highest one.
One of these four towers is dedicated to Shiva Hindu god. Another is dedicated to Ganesha, whose human body is attached to an elephant head. The largest tower (25m) is dedicated to Lady Po Nagar, or the Goddess Uma, the wife of Shiva. On top of the entrance is a statue of Shiva with four arms sitting on the back of a bull. The exterior of the tower is a masterpiece of chisel carvings of fairy dancers and scenes of hunting, boat racing, and pounding rice into a mortar.
The interior of the tower of is reserved for the worshipping of Goddess Po Nagar, who taught people how to plant rice. It is believed that this was where the villagers held offering rituals.
Legend has it that the ancient goddess Ponagar named Thien Y Ana is created by sponges and the moonlight, she was raised by the old couple since childhood, she grew up and become a beautiful girl, one day she sadness with her father’s cold word, she incarnates in frankincense floating on the sea. Her beauty stirred the heart of the North Sea prince. She married and gave birth to two pretty children. Have the happy life, but she doesn't forget the foster parents, so she decides come back to hometown, sadly her parents died because of old age she broken heart stay in for worship. She helps poor people by teaching them animal husbandry, aquaculture. Until one day has a big particles bird down to pick her up to the heaven, because of thankful the villager build tower, sculpt the statue, kept up to present. Annually from March 20th to the 23rd according to the lunar calendar organize the Thap Ba (Ponagar) Festival to praise the merits of Thien Y Thanh Mau Ana.
