The Institute of Oceanography at Nha Trang

    • THE INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY

The Institute of Oceanography, which was established in 1923, was one of the first centers for scientific research in Viet Nam. It is located on an elevated land next to Cau Da port, about 6km from the center of Nha Trang. Nha Trang is an excellent location for tropical oceanographic research because it is close to the Ocean, of course, and the water is deep.
Symbol of Institute of Oceanography is lionfish.
Oceanographers are divided into five areas:
  1. Aquarium and Mangrove
  2. Large specimen
  3. Artificial reef
  4. Marine resources of the Spratly and Paracel archipelagos
  5. Marine biodiversity
The first is Aquarium and mangrove including tanks and cages of marine organisms such as fish, seals, sea cucumbers, sharks, eels, queen fish, the devil fish, turtles, starfish, corals... the purpose both to visitors learn and use for research.
Next to the storage area and displays more than 20,000 specimens of 4,000 species of marine life including the extinct species.
The highlight of the Institute of Oceanography is the large specimen area because of currently it's on display a huge skeleton whale size 26m long, 3m high with 48 vertebrae fully restored though buried underground 200 years. In addition, it also exhibited the skeleton Dugong are endangered and Crutches Hai (stingray 2 horns) weighs nearly 1 ton.
Next to the display area of Marine resources of the Spratly and Paracel archipelagos, including documents and images.
Coming to the Institute of Oceanography tourists will have a chance to visit the Marine Creature Museum, which shows more than 80.000 sea and freshwater specimens, as well as living creatures that are kept in glass tanks.

The list of some fish species in the Institute of Oceanography:

Razorfish - fish live in groups, swimming head downwards helps them camouflage, hiding in the coral reefs or seagrass beds. When in danger, the body of fish moving in the horizontal direction and move with surprising speed.



Blackeye thicklip - fish have very thick lips, the color changes depending on the development of each stage. Adult fish live at depths of about 30 meters, is the main food of krill, polychaete worms and some starfish.



Ptereleotris evides - is gentle, lives in coral reefs, lagoon or bay. Small sized fish, small fish live in herds, grew up living in pairs.



Red Coris Wrasse - colors vary with each stage, they usually bury themselves in the sand during sleep or when in danger.


Tube anemones - also called sea coconut trees. They catch prey using tentacles slender antennae with mucus to catch the creatures hovering above. When in danger, they crouched into the tube to evade.



Hippocampus kuda - is one of the species of fish have high-value in the pharmaceutical, so, the number of serious declines. Like other species of seahorses, the male seahorse has a pouch prior to pregnancy belly and fish hatchery helps mares.



Sea eel - Able to live in saltwater, freshwater, brackish water, likes darkness so often live in burrows, feeding at night. Eel in childhood has willow leaves shaped.



Clown featherback fish -The species is aggressive, territorial defense, but adapted well to the bigger fish.



Black Velvet Angelfish - The species is a gentle, adaptable, longevity.



Lionfish
The fish is very aggressive, likes to eat small fish and oyster meat a day can eat up to 6 fish live.
Colorful, poisonous spines that can sting, deadly, venom will cause pain to death.
Originated in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, Eastern Atlantic and the Caribbean.



Humpback whale skeleton by the people Hai Cuong (Hai Hau, Nam Ha) unearthed while digging on the day 12.08.1994 in the irrigation ditch. The skeleton was buried 1.2 m deep in the field and far from the sea about 4 km, weighing about 10 tons.
